DST

In spring we move our clocks forward an hour, in autumn we fall back an hour: It is the custom of Daylight Saving Time. The video looks at the pros and cons of this practice.

Read the following words and their definitions.
  • straightforward - easy to understand, not complicated
  • repercussions - usually bad or unpleasant effects that happen as a result of an action; negative consequences
  • major - very serious or bad
  • benefits - good or helpful results or effects
  • sleep deprivation - the state of not getting enough sleep to stay healthy
  • universal - done by everyone
  • decline - to become lower in amount or less in number

Answer the questions in writing and/or in a group discussion.
  1. How do we call daylight saving time (DST) in Dutch?

  2. Write down all the statistics (the percentage data) mentioned in the video. For each statistic, note what it refers to.

  3. Which statistic do you find most surprising? Explain your answer.

  4. How many countries in the world observe DST?

  5. Make a list with two columns. In the first column, list the benefits of DST. In the second column, list the negative effects of DST.

  6. Answer the final question of the video. Explain your answer.
