Birdbrain

Figaro is a Goffin cockatoo. So are Dolittle, Pipin, and Kiwi. Researchers in Vienna discovered that these birds are quite smart.

Read the following words and phrases and their definitions.
  • larch wood - wood from a type of tree that is related to pine trees
  • skill - a particular ability
  • transfer a skill - use a skill for a different purpose
  • twig - a small branch of a tree or bush
  • cardboard - a stiff and thick kind of paper
  • beeswax - wax made by bees, used for making candles and other products
  • trim - cut off parts to get the shape you want

First read the assignment. Next watch the video. Take notes to help you do the assignment.

  1. The Goffin cockatoo is compared to a human child of what age?

  2. How did Figaro learn to use tools?

  3. How did the other cockatoos in the experiment learn to use tools?

  4. All four birds get a piece of larch wood, a twig, some cardboard, and beeswax.
For each material, name how many birds could change it into a tool.
