Refugee or Migrant?

Thousands of refugees have fled their home country over the past year. Mahya was one of them. Watch the video to find out more about Some of them have come to Australia. So next we're going to take a look at what a refugee actually is and how they're different to the thousands of migrants that come here to live too.

Read the following words and phrases and their definitions.

• voluntarily - done because you want to and not because you have no other choice
• force to leave - to make it necessary for someone to leave
• gender - the state of being male or female
• confusing - difficult to understand
• charity - an organization that helps people who need help
• volunteer - a person who does work without getting paid to do it
• overseas - in or to a foreign country that is across a sea or ocean
• face challenges - meet with difficult problems that you will have to try and solve

Refugees in Europe

The video explains why refugees in Europe don't stay in their first country of arrival.

Read the following words and phrases and their definitions.

• responsibility - something that you, a group of people, a country, etc. should do because it is morally right, legally required, etc.
• regulation - an official rule or law that says how something should be done
• collapse- to fail or stop working suddenly, to break down completely
• cope - to be able to deal with problems and difficult situations and have solutions
• refugee - someone who has been forced to leave a country because of war or for religious or political reasons
• destitute- extremely poor and wanting
• housing - the houses, apartments, etc., in which people live
• host - to be the person, country, government, etc. that welcomes others and provides basic facilities
• close off - to shut off for a period of time
• allocate - to divide or distribute over different people, countries, etc.
• in accordance with - in a way that agrees with or follows something, for example a rule, law or request

Afghanistan

Vluchtelingen: iedereen heeft het erover en iedereen vindt er wat van. Het is ook een ingewikkeld onderwerp.
Wist jij bijvoorbeeld dat Afghanistan al jaren een zeer gevaarlijk gebied is en een kwart van de vluchtelingen wereldwijd uit Afghanistan komt? In al die jaren zijn al veel gezinnen het land ontvlucht vanwege al het geweld en het gevaar.

Deze woorden en uitdrukkingen kunnen je helpen het filmpje beter te begrijpen:
upheaval = a period of change that causes a lot of conflict, confusion, anger, etc.
from afar = from a great distance
displaced people = people who have been forced to leave the area/country where they live
to make ends meet = to pay for the things that you need to live when you have little money
destitution = being very poor; extreme poverty
profound = very great; significant

World Refugee Day

June 20 is World Refugee Day. Millions of families have fled their homes to escape war or human rights abuses.

The United Nations refugee agency is the UNHCR – the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. It coordinates events worldwide to protect refugees and improve their lives in their countries of refuge.
