For the past few weeks, the world has worried about the threat of the Zika virus. The World Health Organisation has declared it a global health emergency.

Read the following words and phrases and their definitions.

• itch = an uncomfortable or unpleasant feeling on your skin or anywhere on your body that makes you want to scratch
• hence = therefore, for this reason
• rash = a group of red spots on the skin that is caused by an illness or a reaction to something
• sore = painful
• joint = point where two bones meet in the body
• pop up = to appear suddenly or unexpectedly
